Warning signs

Listen to the first second

A healthy start is quick and even. A start that drags, hesitates, or sounds slower on the first turn than the second is telling you the battery is working harder than it should, often weeks before it fails outright.

The charge warning light

That light generally reports a charging system fault rather than battery condition. If it appears while driving, the battery is likely being drained rather than replenished, and distance becomes limited quickly.

When the battery is not the culprit

A car that starts perfectly every morning but dies after sitting for three days usually has a parasitic drain. One that cranks strongly but will not catch is more likely a fuel or ignition issue. Matching the pattern to the cause saves replacing a healthy battery.
