Cold takes capacity away and asks for more
Chemical reaction rates fall as temperature drops, so a battery delivers noticeably less current on a freezing morning. At the same time, thick oil makes the engine harder to turn. The demand goes up exactly when the supply goes down, which is why marginal batteries fail in the first hard frost.
Cranking amp ratings in context
Cold cranking amps describe the current a healthy battery can hold at a low temperature for a short burst. It is a specification measured on a new unit, not a promise about a battery that has already spent four winters under your hood.
Short trips work against you
Starting consumes a large slug of charge. Ten minutes of low speed driving with the heater, lights, and defroster running may not put it back. Over a cold month, that shortfall accumulates into a battery that never returns to full charge.
